We have also recently appeared on the BizKid$ show (Episode #211)! Charlie is my first AKC/UKC/IABCA/APDT show dog. I handled Charlie in conformation (as well as junior showmanship until I aged out) and have many performance plans now that we're done in the breed ring. His hair was clipped short to focus on agility and rally, but I decided to grow him out again to get his Grand Championship - just 1 win left! We have been mainly entering UKC shows for now. Charlie has a wonderful temperament to go with his good looks and learns very quickly - too quickly when he decides to teach himself something! Charlie loves to retrieve! He likes to bring back any toy or object, and place it directly in my hand (service dog retrieve). Unfortunately he never had the chance to swim due to being in show-coat, and prefers not to get wet - though he has jumped into both a lake and pool with enough encouragement. We will continue to work on increasing his enjoyment as swimming is such an important part of the breed's history. Another fun trick is grabbing the leash of a wandering dog and trotting them back to 'safety'. We are working on directing from a distance, with the intention of eventually trying to get a Working Certificate or Junior Hunter. Charlie is my constant shadow, he follows me everywhere - opening doors and going over/under baby-gates if need be - he even 'escaped' a 48" X-pen the first (and only) week I tried to use it. It's a good thing Charlie likes his crate or I would have trouble attending my classes!

Charlie was a relatively high energy youngster, but he has matured into a very calm, stable dog who enjoys to work steadily. He actually chooses to sit still for petting now - before he just wanted someone to throw his ball! He is a 'demo' service dog for the assistance dog program that I started (American Poodles At Work). That means that Charlie is trained to perform the same tasks as a dog who assists a person with mobility impairment - retrieving items, opening doors, operating buttons and light switches, etc. Rather than only having a young dog in-training, Charlie is available to give demonstrations to tour groups who are learning about the program.
